The Blueprint to an 80% Gem Rate: Part 2
Dean Seidman
Once you’ve locked in your financial floor, the real work begins: operational pre-screening. A single overlooked print line or soft corner can turn a predicted PSA 10 into a margin-crushing PSA 8.

Part 2: Pre-Screening Operations & Technical Evaluation
Now that you’ve run the math, identified your Expected Value, and set your raw baseline, it’s time for the hard truth: most cards fail in the details.
While Part 1 established the financial floor, Part 2 focuses on operational execution—how to evaluate centering, inspect surfaces under magnification, and spot minor flaws before paying submission fees. A single overlooked print line or soft corner can turn a predicted PSA 10 into a margin-crushing PSA 8.
Part 2 tackles the operational standard:
How do you systematically pre-screen raw inventory to protect your 80% Gem Rate target?
By establishing a standardized grading station equipped with high-lumen lighting, a centering tool, and a 10x LED loupe, you eliminate emotional bias from your submission pipeline.
The Operational Screening Checklist
Before sending any card to PSA, run it through this four-step physical evaluation:
1. Centering Verification (55/45 Front Standard): Use an optical centering tool or digital overlay to measure margins. While PSA allows up to 60/40 for a Gem Mint 10, target 55/45 or better to leave room for human error during third-party review.
2. Surface Inspection Under Direct Light: Angle the card under high-kelvin white light to catch micro-scratches, dimples, print lines, or surface indentations that aren't visible under ambient room lighting.
3. Edges & Corners (10x Loupe Check): Inspect all four corners for chipping, layering, or whitening. Modern chrome stock is especially prone to edge flaking during factory cutting.
4. Cleaning & Wipe-Down: Gently clean chrome and foil surfaces with a clean microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints and surface oils before placing the card into a penny sleeve and semi-rigid holder.
The Takeaway
Hitting an 80% Gem Rate requires strict operational discipline. If a card fails any of the four physical checkpoints, keep it raw or sell it immediately on your storefront. Never submit a card hoping the grader has a "good day."
