Release Day Seller Playbook
It’s release day! You’ve ripped a box, and want to get your cards listed and sold ASAP to capitalize on new-release excitement. Here’s what to do:
1. Pricing: The release-day rule of thumb
Price high first, then step down
You cannot raise price easily once buyers anchor lower
Why this works Early buyers are:
Break watchers
FOMO-driven
Trying to “be first” (not get a deal)
If you price low immediately, you:
Kill upside
Create the first bad comp everyone else copies
Practical pricing formula If you had to guess a fair long-term price of $X:
List Day 0 at: 1.75× – 2.5× X
Expect no sales for a few hours — that’s fine
Drop in controlled steps, not panic cuts
Example:
You think the card settles around $40
Day 0 list at $79–$99
Day 1–2: $69
Day 3–4: $55
Stabilize once real comps form
2. Auction vs Buy It Now (BIN)
Auctions (only do this if ALL are true)
Player is hot (call-up, viral moment, superstar)
Product hype is extreme
You’re confident multiple bidders will fight
Best hybrid move on eBay
• BIN with Accept Offers
• Auto-accept nothing early
• Manually counter to test demand
This gives you:
• Price discovery
• Buyer signals
• Flexibility without locking in a low comp
3. Maximizing visibility on CollX
• Price slightly below eBay BIN, but not fire-sale
• CollX buyers often make offers and watch before buying
• Being reasonable but not cheapest performs well
4. One advanced move most sellers miss: Create your own comp
If you have multiple copies:
• Sell one aggressively
• Hold the rest
• Let your sale anchor the market
This works shockingly well in low-pop release windows.
